be gentle with yourself

Over the years I have found that I am my own harshest critic. It’s not fair to me that I preach being kind and understanding to others, but not affording myself that same courtesy. Please be gentle with yourself.

If you struggle with mental illness and have trouble getting out of bed, give yourself some grace. You’re allowed to rest and spend time preparing yourself for the day.

If you have chronic pain and you trip and fall, exacerbating the pain you already feel, don’t continue to beat yourself up mentally. You are doing your best to manage your pain the best way you know how.

If you wake up to a huge zit on your face or if you feel shame for how you look, remind yourself that your body is a vessel keeping you alive. At the end of the day, no one will remember you for how you looked, but how you made them feel.

If you made a snafu at work and determine yourself not good enough for the job, take a deep breath. No one else expects perfection from you, so stop expecting it from yourself.

All of these examples happened to me this past week. It’s easy for me to tell you not to be hard on yourself, but I’m slowly learning how to heed my own advice and treat myself with kindness and gentleness.
